Reading Fumu's face

Fumu has nine moods and one rule: its face only changes when a task changes state. Here is what each one tells you at a glance.

Fumu peeking over its pink shades with a knowing look, on a burgundy background.

Fumu is a small spark with two space buns, gold hair ties and a pair of pink rectangular shades. It has no arms, no legs and no speech bubbles. Everything it has to say, it says with the shades.

That restraint is deliberate. An assistant that holds the keys to your inbox should never be louder than the work it is doing, so Fumu follows one rule: its face changes only when a task changes state. If nothing happened, Fumu stays at Hello or stays out of sight.

It is all in the shades

  • Shades on: cool, and listening. A message has arrived and Fumu is taking it in.
  • Shades up: thinking it through with you. Big round eyes, planning or explaining.
  • Shades down the nose: a tip. Fumu peeks over the frames with a suggestion.

Nine moods, each with a job

Hello. A new conversation, the first-run wizard, nothing pending.

Listening. A message is coming in from Telegram, the console or a schedule.

Thinking. Shades pushed up, gold dots trailing: Fumu is working out your request and writing a plan.

Explaining. Next to an answer, with a full record of how it got there.

Pleased. A step finished, or you approved a draft.

Celebrating. Tongue out, three sparks, once. A pull request with green tests, a long task finally done. Rare on purpose: if Fumu celebrated every archived email, it would mean nothing.

Not sure. Fumu needs your approval, or a new fact contradicts something Fumu believed. It shows the worried face and says so plainly.

A tip. You have approved the same kind of action several times, and Fumu suggests turning it into a rule.

Resting. Shades on, dozing. The task is waiting for your reply, a budget is used up for the month, or you pulled the kill switch.

Small, slow, and never in the way

Motion follows the same restraint. Idle is a three-pixel float, only in empty states. When an answer arrives there is one quick squash and settle. Celebrations never loop. When your system asks for reduced motion, all of it stops.

The point of a face is not decoration. Glance at Fumu and you should know, without reading a word, whether it is working, waiting or waiting for you.

Why Fumu asks before it acts

An agent that can send email as you is only useful if you trust it. Here is how Fumu earns that trust one capability at a time, instead of asking for all of it on day one.

A task that can wait three days

Real errands involve waiting: for a reply, an approval or a Monday morning. Fumu is built so that waiting never loses work, and a retry never does anything twice.

Fumu grows one skill at a time

Everything Fumu can do is a capability you can add, pause or remove. New ones arrive with no access, and earn trust the same way as everything else.
